●fuZeへは2回続けて出演し、素晴らしいビジュアルパフォーマンスを披露していただきました。Vol. 1ではHIFANAと、Vol. 2ではASANO TADANOBUと共演されましたが、それぞれどんなパフォーマンスでしたか？

●You performed for fuZe at both of our shows, showing off a very impressive visual performance both times.
You worked with HIFANA in Vol. 1 and ASANO TADANOBU in Vol. 2. What was performing with each of them like?

どちらのパフォーマンスでも、ショープロデューサーのブライアン・バートンルイス(Third Culture)さんに協力してもらったおかげで、思い描いたとおりのパフォーマンスが実現しました。

それぞれずいぶん違うパフォーマンスになったと思います。もっとも、僕のパフォーマンスに同じものは2つとしてないんですが。

First off I just want to mention, for both shows I worked closely with the show producer, Bryant Burton Luis, to make my vision come true. Both shows were very different in their own way. In fact, none of my two shows are ever the same.

●HIFANAは以前から注目されていたんですか？

●Have you had your eye on HIFANA for a while?

HIFANAのパフォーマンスを初めて生で見たのはロサンゼルスのResFest（※1）でのことです。2004年の。
彼らが色々なビジュアルアーティストやグループと、ライブパフォーマンスやミュージックビデオで共演しているデュオだと知りました。打ち込みではなく、デジタルパーカッションドラムマシンを使ってライブ演奏をするというので有名でした。

I first saw HIFANA perform live in Los Angeles for ResFest（※1）, this was back in 2004. I knew they had worked with various visual artists and collectives for their live performances and music videos. The duo is known for playing digital percussion drum machines live.

●fuZeでのパフォーマンス HIFANA × VJ FADER= HIFANA 3D! では、どんなテクニックが使われていたんですか？

●What kind of techniques did you use in “HIFANA × VJ FADER = HIFANA 3D!”, your fuZe performance?

彼らとのパフォーマンスでは、フィンガードラマーとして有名なビートアーティストのジェレミー・エリス（※2）と共演した時にあみ出したテクニックを使ってみました。ジェレミーのNative Instruments MASCHINEと、僕がProcessing（※3）でプログラムしたカスタムビジュアライザーをMIDI経由で接続して、ジェレミーのサウンドと僕のビジュアルを完全に同期させ、オーディオとビジュアルのハイブリッド的な楽器を創るというものです。

For this show I was able to incorporate a technique created with another beat artist, Jeremy Ellis（※2） . I connected his Native Instrument MASCHINE with my custom visualizer sketch programmed in Processing（※3） via MIDI. This way Jeremy’s sound and my visuals are completely in sync, creating a sort of hybrid audio visual instrument.

HIFANAの時も、2人のパフォーマーが同時にビジュアルをトリガーできるように、同じテクニックを使うことに決めました。併せて何かそのショーだけの特別なことをやりたかったので、2種類のビジュアルメディアを1つのステージデザインに組み合わせてみたのです。中央には正方形が45度回転した形にLEDディスプレイパネル（以後LEDスクリーン）を並べ、その周りにピラミッド形のオブジェをいくつも並べてプロジェクションマッピングしたわけです。LEDスクリーンは、僕のもともとのデザインに入っていましたが、新たにプロジェクションマッピングを組み合わせることで、fuZeのための特別なものとなりました。

ドラムマシーンのパッドのレイアウトと同じように、正方形がセット全体に繰り返し現れるようにしました。中央のスクリーンにはHIFANAデュオのトリガーでリアルタイム生成されるビジュアルが表示され、その周りに僕がライブでミックスしたビジュアルを投影するというカタチです。リアルタイム生成するものも、前もって生成しておくものも、すべて内容は各曲のムードに合わせて慎重に選びました。

With HIFANA it was clear that I would use this technique for both performers to trigger visuals simultaneously. In conjunction, I wanted to do something special for this show: to combine two types of visual mediums into a single stage design. In the center square are LCD panels (originally my design involved LED panels) rotated 45 degrees, surrounded by repeating projection mapped pyramid shapes.

Like the pads on a drum machine, the square shapes are being repeated over the entire set. The center screen displays real-time generative visuals triggered by HIFANA, surrounded by video mapped visuals mixed live by me. Both generative and pre-generated content are carefully selected to reflect the mood of each song.

●ASANO TADANOBUとの共演を熱望されていたと聞きましたが、本当ですか？

●I heard you’ve been eager to perform alongside ASANO TADANOBU. Is that true?

浅野忠信さんは以前から憧れの人でした。彼の出演作には僕が大好きな映画がたくさんあるんです。『殺し屋１』とか、『モンゴル』とか、個人的にいちばん好きなのは『地球で最後のふたり』ですね。

ビジュアルアーティストとして参加した、2013年のフジロックフェスティバルでのパーティーイベントのオールナイト・フジでは、ASANO TADANOBUさんのライブが見られてうれしかった。俳優として有名な方なのであまり知られていませんが、実はテクノのライブをやるんです。小さなヤマハのドラムシーケンサーで。音楽というのは個人的なものだと思いますが、ASANO TADANOBUさんの音楽をあえて言葉で表すとすればダークテクノと呼びたい。トランス状態に持っていかれるような感じです。

With ASANO TADANOBU my admiration goes back even further. I’m a big fan of many of his films for example ‘Ichi the Killer’, ‘Mongol’ and my personal favorite ‘Last Life in the Universe’.

I even had the pleasure of seeing him play live at Fuji Rock Festival 2013. Many people thinks of him as an actor but few knew he plays live techno with a tiny Yamaha drum sequencer. Music is a personal thing, and if I had to describe his music, I would call it dark techno, the type that can put you in a trance.
